We test under the same conditions

Each model goes through the same routine in comparable conditions, so we're comparing real-world performance rather than the figures on the box. We install every model the way you would at home, leave it to settle, fill it with a realistic weekly shop, and watch how it behaves over time. That consistency is what makes a fair comparison possible: an appliance that looks good on paper but holds temperature unevenly or wastes its quoted capacity has nowhere to hide.

The criteria we score

We judge the things that make a difference when you actually live with an appliance, not just the spec sheet:

Cooling — how evenly and reliably it holds temperature across the fridge and freezer, and how quickly it recovers after the door has been open.
Capacity — how much usable space you really get, how well the shelving and drawers are laid out, and whether the fridge-to-freezer split is genuinely practical.
Running cost — the energy rating and annual kWh figure translated into a real yearly cost, because the appliance runs every hour for years.
Frost-free performance — whether the freezer genuinely keeps ice from building up, sparing you the defrosting chore.
Noise and ease of use — how quiet it is in a quiet kitchen, and how sensible the controls, door layout and shelving are day to day.

Each model's gauges and overall rating on this site come from these criteria, scored from 1 to 5. A high score isn't about being the biggest or the most expensive — it's about being the best fit for the buyer the appliance is aimed at.

Honest sizing, honest verdicts

A central part of our method is judging each model against the household it's actually built for. We don't penalise a slim budget unit for failing to hold a big family's shop, or a tall family model for being too deep for a galley kitchen — those would be the wrong homes. Instead we judge each model on its intended job, and then tell you plainly which buyer it suits. That's why our reviews always say who a product isn't for, not just who it is.

How we use specifications

Manufacturer specifications are a starting point, not the verdict. A litre figure tells us the rough household a model is built for, and the energy label gives a quoted annual consumption — but headline capacity can include space you can't really use, and lab energy figures are measured in ideal conditions. So we treat the spec sheet as a hypothesis to test rather than a result to report. Where a model's real-world behaviour matches its claims, we say so; where the usable space is smaller or the cooling less even than the numbers suggest, that's exactly the kind of gap our hands-on testing exists to catch. The rating you read here reflects what the appliance actually does, not what the box promises.

The role of customer reviews

We read widely around each model, including the experiences of ordinary owners, because long-term reliability and common annoyances often only surface after months or years of use. A pattern of owners reporting a noisy compressor, a flimsy salad drawer or a freezer that frosts up tells us something a single test session can't. We weigh that alongside our own testing rather than instead of it — a flood of five-star reviews doesn't earn a place on its own, and a handful of one-star complaints doesn't automatically disqualify a model. The aim is a rounded picture: our hands-on judgement, informed by the lived experience of people who've run these appliances for the long haul.

We'd rather show a slightly shorter list of appliances we genuinely stand behind than pad the page with options we wouldn't recommend, so a model only stays on our list as long as it remains the best choice for its buyer.
